Album to eliminate violence

ISTANBUL - Thirteen of Turkey’s top vocalists have come together to produce an album in aid of the International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women that took place Nov. 25.

The resulting album, "Güldünya Şarkıları," which includes songs by acclaimed performers Sezen Aksu and Ajda Pekkan, aims to reach out to women who have been affected by domestic violence.

The album is a part of the "End Family Violence" campaign launched by daily Hürriyet five years ago. The campaign hopes the album will encourage those affected by family violence to use the new helpline set up by Hürriyet and the Istanbul governor’s office last year. The professional physiologists who answer calls on the 24-hour emergency line have provided victims with psychological support over the past year.

A surprise feature of the album is a collaboration by all 13 artists performing a famous song that featured in a demonstration during the 1980s. Sezen Aksu, Ajda Pekkan, Nazan Öncel, Emel Müftüoğlu, Aynur, Zuhal Olcay, Aylin Aslım, Nilüfer, Şebnem Ferah, Şevval Sam, Rojin, Ayten Alpman and Funda Arar are the artists on the album The album was launched Nov. 25 and money will go to the helpline.Hurriyet, December 07, 2008
